Apple vs Microsoft againWe're big fans of the Surface Studio 2, but we also appreciate the impact of the trailblazer of the all-in-one PC segment, the Apple iMac. We're going to help you choose between these two incredible computers.Category redefining
Surface Studio 2
The icon
iMac (2019)
The Surface Studio 2, like its predecessor, has redefined the all-in-one category. But, while it remains the most desirable Windows PC ever made, it's also flawed, with older processors, a lack of Thunderbolt 3, and a price most won't be prepared to pay.
Pros
- Innovative design
- Huge high resolution touch display
- Digital pen support
- Surface Dial support
- Powerful GPUs
Cons
- Incredibly expensive
- 7th Gen processors only quad-core
- No Thunderbolt 3
The newest refresh to the iMac adds latest generation processors from Intel, some decent options for storage, RAM and dedicated graphics, and maintains its iconic design. Importantly, it can cost significantly less than the Surface Studio 2, and you can still run Windows 10 on it if you wish.
Pros
- Striking design
- Powerful internals
- High resolution display
- 9th Gen processors up to Core i9
- Thunderbolt 3
Cons
- No touch display or pen support
- Spec upgrades are expensive
It used to be that creators would instinctively just buy an iMac, and for many years that was probably the right thing to do. Today, however, the Surface Studio 2 has so much to offer the current crop of creators and professional users that in many ways it's the right choice. But it's incredibly expensive, impossible to upgrade, and can't make use of Thunderbolt 3 accessories. The iMac, by contrast, can be had in a perfectly capable spec for much less, has that all important Thunderbolt 3 connection, and can run Windows 10 if you want in addition to macOS.
The draw to the Surface Studio 2 has to be the display. If the hinge, touch and pen support, and the optional Surface Dial appeal to you and your work, you'll be very happy. If you don't really need any of those things in your life, the iMac is probably a smarter choice.
Two iconic all-in-one PCs
Without the iMac's influence, the all-in-one PC space would probably look very different today. Apple might have the iMac Pro as its top tier desktop, but the mainstream model hasn't been forgotten, especially with a new model hitting the shelves.
Let's see how it compares on a hardware basis with the Surface Studio 2

Unusually, the Apple hardware is actually available for a lower price than the comparable Windows PC. Price alone shouldn't be the deciding factor, but it's a pretty big part of it.
The key thing to consider is how you intend to use whichever you buy. The Surface Studio 2 has inferior hardware in some regards, such as the processor and lack of Thunderbolt 3, but it offers an experience that the iMac simply cannot match. That big, beautiful display is a giant canvas for you to draw and write on, touch and drag, and interact with in ways that is impossible on any Mac.
The Surface Studio 2 is probably the ultimate niche PC. It's desirable to all, but only truly useful to a handful. The iMac, by contrast, has a more mass market approach.
There's no touch or pen, and the display is fixed in position; but it has a better processor, a huge list of potential upgrades (if you're willing to pay Apple's often extortionate prices), two sizes, and a far more attractive price.
Choosing between Mac OS and Windows 10
The biggest difference between these two, of course, is the software. Mac OS and Windows 10 have plenty in common and share a lot of the same third party apps — as well as Microsoft Office — but they're still different.
Mac OS is very pleasant to use, incredibly well optimized, and always performs well. It also has great software support from Microsoft, such as with the Office Suite, OneDrive, and Skype, as well as notable third-party support from the likes of Adobe and Google. Many of the same apps can be used on a Mac as on Windows 10.
There is, however, one more thing. Thanks to Boot Camp, you can easily install Windows 10 as a dual-boot on a Mac. The same cannot be said of doing the reverse. So, with the iMac, you can have access to both platforms.
The bottom line
For the right type of buyer, that is, someone involved in photography, graphics, video editing or technical applications such as CAD, the Surface Studio 2 offers an unrivaled, if still flawed experience. Computing with your hands with input devices like the Surface Dial and the Surface Pen can truly change your workflow for the better. But it comes at a price.
Alternatively, the iMac is a suitably powerful all-in-one with a few bits of hardware that you won't get on the Surface Studio 2. You can get one in two sizes, spec up an Intel Core i9 six-core processor if you want, and hook up all manner of things over Thunderbolt 3, including an eGPU. Even the entry level iMac can be used in this way with a desktop class graphics card.
Microsoft auto update mac cant shutdown. How to Fix Microsoft Office AutoUpdate for Mac not working. By Andre Da Costa. I’d pretty much abandoned MS Office 365 because of the auto-update ‘hang’ problem. I found no solution that. Discusses that you cannot install an update for Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 or Microsoft Office for Mac 2008. Provides several methods to help resolve the problem. Office for Mac update error: 'Office can't be installed on this disk'. Apr 18, 2012 I may need to update my copy of Excel for Mac. Apparently this is done (automatically or manually) with something called Microsoft Updater, which supposedly comes as part of the Microsoft suite. That's all that Excel's help menu tells me. However, I can't find any file or application called 'AutoUpdate' on my computer.
For most people considering these two, the iMac is the smart choice. Third-party app support is on par with Windows 10 and if there is something you simply can't get, you can simply install Windows on a dual-boot partition. If you fit into the niche that will truly find the unique features of the Surface Studio 2 useful, it remains unmatched.
Niche power
Surface Studio 2
The most desirable PC is still niche
As a thing, the Surface Studio 2 is truly remarkable. But it's still a niche PC and most people can get what they need while spending less. If you're the sort of person who can make the most of it, though, it remains unmatched.
Best for most
iMac (2019)
For once, Apple has a more affordable product
The iMac is the better choice for most, but not just because you can get one for less. Add an eGPU over Thunderbolt 3 and pair it with the six-core Intel processors and you have a powerful all-in-one that's capable of running anything you need, including Windows 10.

Protect that BookProtect your Surface Book 2 with one of these cases
Looking for some protection for your Surface Book 2? Here are the best cases we can find right now.
Instead of a new Mac Pro, Apple included some of its more expensive options and parts as standard in the 'new' 2017 model. An all-new Mac Pro is still some time away, no doubt leaving many feeling a bit let down.
The Mac Pro is five years old at this point and instead of waiting (and waiting, and waiting) how about a compact Windows 10 machine that oozes performance?
Here are some of the best PCs to consider.
The Mac Pro isn't the only cylindrical computer on the market, and MSI's Vortex is every bit the looker. It's a tiny little can on the outside, but what MSI squeezed inside is nothing short of miraculous.
At the heart, you'll find an Intel Core i7 8700 six-core processor in the best all-round configuration. You'll also find 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of RAM keeping it company, along with solid-state drive (SSD) and hard disk drive (HDD) combinations for storage. Then there's the graphics.
You can have a single GTX 1070 inside the Vortex, or a single GTX 1080. Both of these are terrific graphics cards, but there's also room inside to fit a pair of GTX 1070 cards if you'd prefer. Apple isn't the only company that can fit dual-GPUs inside a small cylinder.
Add in Killer Doubleshot-X3 Pro networking, Thunderbolt 3 and the ability to upgrade parts down the line, and you have an extremely enticing little powerhouse. And it costs less than a base Mac Pro, as well, depending on which you go for. The one mentioned here is $2,000. MSI also offers a workstation grade Vortex with NVIDIA Quadro graphics if you prefer.
Corsair One
Corsair isn't known for making PCs. This one is, in fact, its very first, but the company's reputation for quality is unquestionable. With the Corsair One, you're no longer just buying a case, you're getting a complete PC inside it.
Not just a PC, either. A seriously powerful PC. And one that costs a lot less than a Mac Pro.
What it doesn't have is Thunderbolt 3. But what it does have is the latest and greatest internals to make a screaming fast machine. Intel's latest Core i7-8700K six-core unlocked processor is here, as is NVIDIA's GTX 1080 or GTX 1080 Ti GPU. There's even an option for liquid cooling, so you get ultimate power and a whisper-quiet machine.
The Corsair One is also entirely upgradeable because it uses standard-size parts inside that sleek, compact body. Prices start at around $2,300 for the latest models, which is certainly reasonable considering what's inside.
Origin PC S-Class
If you're looking for a small, powerful PC built entirely to your specifications, the S-Class by Origin PC will fit the bill. Almost everything is customizable, from the exterior case color to how many drives you have and which GPU. It's also possible to build the ultimate system and send the price tag into orbit!
That's not to say the Chronos Pro is ridiculously expensive, but there are options that include Xeon and Extreme edition Intel processors, AMD Ryzen 8-core processors, up to NVIDIA Titan V graphics cards or an almost $9,000 workstation-grade NVIDIA Quadro GPU.
Mac Pro 2019 Microsoft Equivalent Pc Version
You can spend much less and get more 'normal' internals, such as 8th Generation Core i7 processors, 32GB of RAM, GTX 1070 or 1080 graphics cards and SSD or HDD storage options. The beauty of the Origin system is that you can put exactly what you want inside your PC, as long as you're happy to pay the price.
ASUS GR8 II
While not exactly subtle in appearance, the latest revision to the ASUS GR8 is small in size and big in performance. It's also a bit cheaper than others listed here, while still offering a lot in a small space.
For $1,200, you'll find a Core i7 7700 processor, 16GB of RAM and a NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card. Throw in a combination of SSD and HDD storage and ASUS's Aura lighting, and you have a small-form PC that sparkles inside and out.
The custom cooling on the GR8 also keeps it very quiet, with ASUS claiming it's up to 23 percent less noisy than comparable systems. It lacks Thunderbolt 3 but covers every other base when it comes to ports, so you're not going to be caught short.
